Literacy and Numeracy Skill Development

At Staughton College, we are also focusing on using numeracy strategies to solve mathematical problems and teachers are using best practices to support student learning. Students in Years 7 – 9 participate in weekly problem solving sessions to develop deeper thinking and improve their numeracy skills. We have recently participated in the Future Ready Program run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria, which has aided in developing and implementing excellent teacher practice in the classroom to improve student learning.

Literacy is the foundation of many of the tasks that we engage in on a daily basis. It enables us to read, understand what we are reading, develop vocabulary to engage in conversations and to be able to interpret and analyse a variety of texts.

To support students to enhance their literacy skills, Staughton College has been working on a range of classroom strategies to improve student skill development. Reading conferences between students and teachers are conducted to ensure students understand what they read and are developing their vocabulary.  Teachers explicitly teach the Comprehension Strategies to support students to be able to monitor their reading and comprehension. The writing process is supported within classes to develop student ideas and structure within their pieces.  Along with these strategies, Staughton has implemented tutorial groups on a daily basis. 

Tutorial Groups

Staughton College runs Tutorial Groups every day before recess.  Once a week the focus of these sessions is on School Wide Positive Behaviour Support.  In these sessions students explore areas relevant to their year levels, such as the importance of goal setting, careers and study techniques.

Another session concentrates on explicitly teaching the literacy strategies that enable students to better understand the texts they are reading.  During this time, learning is differentiated based on the reading levels of the students in the tutorial group.  We endeavour to provide skills to those students who are not where we would expect them to be for their year level and to adequately extend those students who are at or above where they should be.

The remaining three sessions in the week are made up of independent reading, during which time students are able to enjoy ‘Just Right’ texts.  It is during these classes that teachers will conference and help set reading goals with the students, which are then shared with their English teachers. Students need to ensure that they have their Just Right Texts at school daily.

At Staughton College we strongly believe that literacy is the gateway to learning success, and therefore it is a whole school priority.  All teachers are trained to deliver this curriculum and to take responsibility for the literacy progress of their pupils. 

Literacy and Numeracy Assessment

All students across years 7 – 10 are involved in a regular program of Literacy and Numeracy Assessment. The purpose of the assessment program is to track student progress throughout the year and to use the data to work with individual students around goal setting.
