VCAL

Victorian certificate of applied learning (VCAL) is an alternative academic pathway ideally suited to those students wanting to gain knowledge and employability skills that help prepare the individual for life beyond schooling. This pathway is best suited for students seeking work within an industry specific pathway or for further education in a TAFE institution. There are three certificate levels awarded for the successful completion of VCAL units: Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. These are determined on how well students work independently, whether they follow all projects to completion, to what level they fulfil outcomes and how much teacher support they require. Staughton College offers the VCAL pathway to students from year 11 as an alternative to mainstream VCE education.

In conjunction with the VCAL pathway, it is essential that students enrol in vocational education training in schools subject, also known as ‘VETiS’.  Students are required to complete a VET Course for one day a week and to organise one day per week work placement. Being a member school of the western edge cluster, Staughton College can offer students a choice of up to 16 VETiS subjects, these subjects run annually dependant on numbers. VETiS subjects are delivered by teaching staff that are formally qualified in the area they are teaching. They are also provided through a partnership program with a registered training organisation (RTO).

To be successful in the VCAL program, students must complete units of work under four broad headings: Work Related Skills, Personal Development, Literacy and Numeracy which directly connects to their chosen pathway. Units from the VCAL program also encompass units from the VETiS program therefore VCAL, VETiS and weekly work placements come together to provide the student with a more successful career pathway.
